Launched on 18 December 2012, the GÖKTÜRK-2 satellite has successfully contributed to Türkiye’s Earth observation capabilities for 13 years—far exceeding its originally planned design lifetime of five years—while operating in service of the Turkish Armed Forces. Now marking its 13th year in orbit, GÖKTÜRK-2 continues its mission under the responsibility of TÜBİTAK UZAY. With the experience and knowledge it has accumulated over more than a decade, the satellite remains a source of inspiration for next-generation national satellites and young researchers.

Representing a major milestone in Türkiye’s high-resolution Earth observation capabilities, GÖKTÜRK-2 stands as a tangible indicator of the country’s progress in space technologies—from system design and testing to integration and in-orbit operations. Throughout its mission, the satellite has provided critical imagery supporting defense, security, mapping, environmental monitoring, and disaster management, while also contributing to the advancement of space-based decision-support systems.

The transfer of operational responsibility for GÖKTÜRK-2 to TÜBİTAK UZAY further strengthens the Institute’s operational expertise and institutional know-how in Earth observation satellites. Continuing its successful mission in orbit, GÖKTÜRK-2 will not only remain an active imaging system, but will also serve as a living laboratory-enhancing Türkiye’s satellite operations experience, informing engineering processes, and providing valuable input for the design and development of future Earth observation missions.

Beyond its technical achievements, GÖKTÜRK-2 embodies the vision, dedication, and collective effort of a generation, standing as a symbol of the lasting impact and accumulated expertise of Türkiye’s space journey. The operational experience, technical knowledge, and institutional capacity gained throughout its mission constitute a strong legacy for both current and future satellite programs.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all engineers, technicians, and stakeholders who contributed to every stage of this long-term mission. We remain committed to carrying forward the experience gained from GÖKTÜRK-2 to ensure the continuity and success of Türkiye’s future space missions.
