The "UN Conference on Space Law and Policy" was hosted by the Republic of Turkey with the joint organization of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), Asia Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO), Turkish Space Agency (TUA) and TUBITAK Space Technologies Research Institute and with the support of Istanbul Technical University (ITU) on 23-26 September in Istanbul. The conference was hosted by our organization at ITU Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center (SDKM) and attended by more than 200 representatives from 6 continents and 45 countries, including leading scientists, executives and experts in the field of space law and policy. The fact that the conference was held immediately after the Space Law Training organized by our institution and APSCO on 18-21 September 2019, also at SDKM, contributed significantly to the quality of international participants and speakers.
The opening speeches of the conference were delivered by Prof. Dr. Alper Ünal, Vice Rector of Istanbul Technical University; Niklas Hedman, Chief of the Committee, Policy and Legal Affairs Division of the UN Office for Space Affairs; Dr. Li Xinjun, Secretary General of APSCO; Mr. Serdar Hüseyin Yıldırım, President of the Turkish Space Agency; and Assoc. Serdar Hüseyin Yıldırım, President of the Turkish Space Agency, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lokman Kuzu, Director of TÜBİTAK UZAY. The event, which is of great importance for Turkey in terms of international visibility and prestige, was widely attended by executives, scientists and experts working in the field of space in our country. The conference was also considered to be of great benefit in terms of capacity building and coordination in this period when concrete steps are being taken towards institutionalization in the field of space in Turkey.
